Sus Hijas is a program started at HNS seven years ago by co-founders Becca Price and Lee Pressly (both experts in the field of textile construction). After discovering six old sewing machines at HNS, they decided that this was an opportunity to reach out to the community. After having the machines fixed, they started Sus Hijas or His Daughters. First they began teaching women how to sew clothes for their kids, pillow cases for their homes, and a variety of other items. Now, some of the student seamstresses are so accomplished that they sew on a contractual basis for some of San Antonio's finest restaurants.
In recent years, Sus Hijas has turned into a cottage industry, where each woman receives all the profit from each item sold. Items for sale include necklaces, bracelets, pendants, and hand-beaded totes and Bible covers. Each item is one-of-a kind never to be seen on another person.
Sus Hijas is a great program that encourages fellowship among women, creates and strengthening the bond of the local community, provides a marketable skill and is a proactive approach to fighting isolation and depression--many HNS clients suffer from both.
