The House of Neighborly Service (HNS) is a non-profit, multi-service, neighborhood center, founded in 1917 by Presbyterian missionaries, which serves families from San Antonio's Westside. Westside residents are primarily low-income, Hispanic (90%), and less then 50% have graduated from high school. HNS has provided a wide range of social, educational, and health-related programs throughout its ninety year history with an emphasis on helping families move towards independence and self-sufficiency.
Since the founding of HNS, services to children and their families have been central to its mission. For example, HNS provided kindergarten classes to neighborhood children for over 50 years (the State of Texas began paying for public kindergarten in 1970). At HNS, we look forward to serving San Antonio's Westside families for another 90 years (or more) and enhancing the quality of life in the community.
