HNS' Senior Outreach is based on the strong belief that both the mental and physical health of the elderly is enhanced when they remain active through volunteering or participating in other activities. HNS' "Senior Volunteer Program" began in 2003 when HNS enrolled a 97 year old man as a "volunteer" in its food distribution program. Since then HNS has partnered with the Foster Grandparents program to assist staff in HNS' Child Development Center.
For many low-income Westside seniors the lack of a supportive social network or meaningful involvement with others is a central issue. Depending on the interests of the individual we will refer the senior to one of HNS' programs such as its sewing, quilting, or wellness classes. We also inform seniors of other Westside community agencies that have programs for seniors. Since most of the seniors come to HNS to obtain food they will also be invited to HNS' Senior Lunch. This program has social engagement while sharing a meal as a central goal.
